The Best Homemade Waffles

My 4-year-old grandson is a very picky eater — but he will eat these waffles every time. They’re light, crispy, and simple to make, which makes them a family favorite.

Instructions

Step 1. Preheat your waffle iron so it’s ready when the batter is done.

Step 2. In a large bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt.

Step 3. In another bowl, whisk the wet ingredients: eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.

Step 4. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and stir gently until just combined. The batter should be slightly lumpy—do not overmix.

Step 5. Lightly grease the waffle iron with oil or cooking spray.

Step 6. Pour the batter into the waffle iron and cook until the waffles are golden brown and crisp, usually 3–5 minutes depending on your waffle maker.

Step 7. Remove carefully and serve warm. Remove carefully and serve warm. Use real maple syrup or make a berry syrup by cleaning and slicing strawberries (or using whole blueberries, raspberries, or blackberries). Place the fruit in a saucepan with sugar and cook for about 15 minutes until the mixture becomes syrupy. Pour over waffles and enjoy.
